Parental Involvement

Australian schools encourage the participation of parents/guardians in their children’s schooling. Parents may talk to the principal or class teacher about any aspect of their child’s education.
We ask our parents to do the following:

Reporting to Parents/Guardians

Teachers assess students’ progress regularly. This may take the form of tests, short talks, exercises, book reports, pieces of writing and teacher observations.

At CELS parents/guardians receive formal written reports prepared by their Mentor Teacher. The report will indicate your child’s achievements and progress and how they can be helped to do better.

3 Way Conferences are held each term to discuss students’ progress and their future schooling. Interpreters are provided for these interviews to facilitate effective communication.

Absences

If your child is absent from school, please write a note for your child in English or your language, or use the absence form provided. Your child gives the note to their Mentor teacher when they return to school. This is a legal requirement. A phone call to inform us of an absence is also appreciated.

Leaving School During the Day

We prefer that students do not have appointments during school time, but if it is necessary, please write a note requesting for your child to leave at a specific time. This must be given to the teacher at the start of the school day.

Playground Supervision

Teachers are on duty in the playground for fifteen minutes before school, at recess, at lunchtime and for fifteen minutes after school. Please make sure your child is not at school more than fifteen minutes before the start of school or at the end of the day.

Pupil Free Days

The Victorian Department of Education has nominated four days in the school year for the purposes of professional learning and reporting to parents. You will be notified of the dates well in advance. On these days no students attend school.

Change of Information

It is essential that our records are kept up to date so please inform the school of any change of address, telephone number, emergency contact number or a child’s medical condition.

Hats

It is compulsory for primary children to wear hats in terms 1 and 4. Secondary students are strongly encouraged to wear hats and use sun protection.

Safety While Travelling

Parents and teachers share responsibility for the welfare and safety of students. Please train children in all aspects of safety including:

Car Park

Please do not use the school’s car park. This area is reserved for staff members.

Valuables

Students should not bring valuable items to school.

Length Of The Course

Students with age equivalent schooling are entitled to a two term program, though the length of stay may vary relative to student language needs. The maximum stay is one year. Reasons for keeping students up to one year include: disruption to previous schooling, a low level of English, or learning difficulties. We will discuss the length of stay needed for your child at 3 Way Conference which is held each term.
